Cape Cod vacation October 11-18, 2008 Completed

These vacation pictures comes with a warning:

You may want to head to the East Coast after viewing these pictures.

I must admit there are a lot of pictures and it doesn't scratch the surface of the fun and beauty that we witnessed.

so Bob says I don't put my descriptions in the right place he thinks they need to be on top of the pictures but I like the way I do it so the pictures come first and then the descriptions.

We drove to Kansas before flying out to Cape Cod, MA and spent time with the grandbaby!

Sunrise pictures from the plane

Flew into Providence, Rhode Island

We met the Johnson's (Kevin,Lori,Samantha,Courtney and Pat) in Jamestown, R.I. and ate lunch on the pier

Headed over to Newport, R.I. to see some mansions and walked the Cliffwalk

Yummy Breakfast in Cape Cod

Visited a lighthouse

Cold...yes

Just some beautiful scenery for you.

Here Sam, Courtney and myself are walking out on the ocean floor at low tide on Skaket Beach. We walked 3/4 mile out.

Finding stuff on the ocean floor.

Some of the water we had to wade through..why did we leave our shoes on you ask...we didn't want to cut our feet on shells and crab bodies left on the sand.

Looking back towards the beach.

Kevin joined us and found some live hermit crab and other fun stuff.

We made it back to the beach just as the sun was going down. This is a rock fairly close to 'shore' but still out in the ocean. Later in the week we came back to Skaket with Amber and this rock was under water and all you could see was the bouy tied to it.
Low tide is over and the water is coming in. Skaket Beach

Went to Cape Cod Potato factory. On our way to our next destination we ate the chips and rocked out to some IPOD tunes.

So we are at Fort Hill Trail and it was beautiful to walk among the colors of autumn. One disaster is at this point (on this last picture) Kevin lost his glasses. We all searched the trail for about an hour and never found them. Big bummer. The next day he did go to Lenscrafters and within an hour he was back in business.

Provincetown the pilgrims first landing. We walked around the city it was a great shopping town. Ate at the Lobster Pot and had some fabulously fresh lobster, mussel, and vegetable pasta for the non-fish eater in our group not mentioning any names, Cork.

Here is where the first wireless signal station to broadcast to Europe was built.

Headed to Martha's Vineyard. We missed the Steamship that heads over and took a Freighter.

We decide to take a bus tour but first walk around the downtown area. It ended up that most stores were closed or didn't open till 11a

(The pictures above were taken through our bus window, Bob and I sat on the front seat)
We take a bus tour and our guide is a man named Bruce who has lived on the island since 1970 and has been a tour guide about that long. Well I don't think I have pictures of the bus but if you will try to picture a school bus painted with the tour company logo you have the picture of our 'luxury' tour. Bruce was very knowledgeable but he must 'moonlight' as a homeless man because he had bad teeth and smelled and his beard was somewhat questionable as to it's contents. None the less our time was well spent as the pictures above will prove. Along the way he pointed out various famous people's homes but you couldn't see them because of all the foliage.

One of our stops on the tour was Aquinnas and the Clay Cliffs

This is our tour guide, Bruce

(The buoy collection on the right of the above picture is a common sight throughout Cape Cod)

At the end of the tour we got off in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard and they have a community of 'Gingerbread' houses. The lots are tent-sized lots and so the residents built little homes to fit the lots. They were so cute we all just fell in love with them.

The line to board the Steamboat to the main land. This is the one we missed on the way to Martha's Vineyard.

The ride back was cold and windy but we stuck it out, joyfully?.

A harbor view of Martha's Vineyard

On Thursday we all headed for a town called Sandwich and a glass museum. Bob and I left to pick up Amber at the airport in Providence, R.I. and then met up with the Johnson's later

We went over so many bridges my head was thouroughly spinning. I suspect some bridge crossings were purposeful something about therapy for my phobia....

Amber arriving in Providence!

Met back up with Johnson's at Port Island Marina at one of the thousands of Dunkin donuts on Cape Cod! Sorry I caught most of you munching away but it is the best picture of the group of us.

Stretching out for the trip to West Yarmouth where our resort is.

Went to a private beach at sunset and Samantha found a beautiful shell. I didn't get a picture of it but when she sends me her pictures I will post it here.

BOSTON

We spent Friday on a walking tour of Boston called the 'Freedom Trail' it was 6 hours of walking through our American history. We were tired by the end of the day but what we learned and felt was worth every sore muscle. If you can beleive it there were no major whining and near the end of the walk the girls, Lori and Kevin walked 294 steps straight up in a narrow two-lane passageway at Bunker Hill monument with a smile and feeling of accomplishment.

Our theme for all our car tours this week was 'U-turns and getting lost' adventures. When we saw this sign (and yes we took a wrong turn) we just lost it and laughed till we nearly lost control of the cars. (Did I mention that we had two rental cars, thank goodness for cell phones) The sign says 'U-turn to Boston'.

We passed Fenway park as we got lost heading into Boston. (This is what I mean by adventures, we always found something cool and interesting)

Now we begin our 'Freedom Trail' walking tour.

We started the walk where our forefathers were buried.

Downtown Boston

Ate lunch at 'The Carving Station'

Old State House, Boston Massacre sight

Historical downtown

Stopping for some modern day penny stretching

Open produce markets

Crosswalk art
Beautiful suspension bridge, one we actually did not go across.

Walked through the Italian district and stopped at 'Mike's Pastry' for their world famous Canoli pastry. It was excellent.

Paul Revere statue

The church of Paul Revere's time. Still in use today
Outside Stephens church is racks of dog tags for those who lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq.
294 narrow steps to the top...Let's do it!
Walking across the bridge to the U.S.S. Constitution.
U.S.S. constitution still an active ship since 1928.
A little shopping after all that walking is refreshing

This is the car that Bob drove

Boston at night

Plymouth Beach

Replica of the Mayflower II

Character actors on the Mayflower II. Answer questions of the pilgrims time only.

The actual Plymouth Rock

Ate at a fabulous Pizza place called "Mama Mia's"

Skaket beach at low tide but it was too cold and not fully recessed as the last visit so we left

Back at the resort we went to the sports center and played some table tennis and tennis.

So this is our trip. We give a huge thank you to Lori for all the research she did. We would not have been able to see all that we did without her efforts.

Great photos! I can just imagine the quantity of photos you didn't have room to post! Looks like lots of fun. The rest of us missed out on another great Larson-Johnson epic adventure.
